Every year the cast of all the major shows in the West End raise money for the Make A Difference Trust. West End Eurovision, in its fifth year, sees casts compete by singing old Eurovision songs, aiming to win the votes of the audience and celebrity judges. Normally it’s the ensemble members who compete at this after show event and camp doesn’t quite cover it. However this year, the 2000-strong crowd rose to their feet as Michael Ball, musical theatre royalty and actual 1992 Eurovision competitor, took to the stage to re-create his entry One Step Out of Time – slitting the throat of his young usurper (a la Sweeney Todd) to finish the song to the screams of the crowd.
The punchline came when Ball swaggered off stage shouting: “Mrs Lovett – I’m peckish!” to which his co-star Imelda Staunton marched on to clear up the carnage roaring: “It was 20 years ago Michael, get over it!” It goes without saying – they won.
