After seeing "Journey's End" and "Birdsong" I wanted to see what the recruitment posters from the First World War were like. I don't exactly know what I think about these images, not fully grasping what societal pressure was like at the time. From this distance, knowing what we know now, in a time where national pride and the thought of fighting for your country are not exactly high on our list of priorities, and looking at things from a purely human perspective, all I can think of are all the young men they lured to an almost certain death or a life left scarred by what they experienced- I think that's what makes me uncomfortable looking at them now.
